“The Exceeding Sinfulness Of Abortion”

Romans 7:13 Was then that which is good made death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good; that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful.

In our day, the very concept of sin is very, very often mocked and made fun of. If you walk on to the campus of 99 out of 100 secular universities and strike up a discussion about sin, you are going to find out that people either do not believe in it, or define it in a very different way than what Scripture defines it. Worse still, a great many people who call themselves Christians are among the ranks of those scoffers!

But you know, a funny thing happens when you actually read your Bible. When you read your Bible, you find out how God feels about things. And one of the ways you find out how God feels about things is to see how many times and in how many ways He mentions it.

Sin – 443x (not including “wilderness of sin”)
Sins – 172
Sinned – 119
Sinner – 21
Sinners – 48
Sinnest – 1
Sinneth – 22
Sinning – 2
Iniquity – 278
Iniquities – 56
Transgress – 14
Transgressed – 34
Transgressest – 1
Transgresseth – 4
Transgressing – 2
Transgression – 51
Transgressions – 48
Transgressor – 5
Transgressors – 20

Those are just the main words, there are actually many others. Just in those words we find sin mentioned 1,169 times. If sin is an outdated notion, then the entire Bible is outdated. But the fact of the matter is, sin is not an outdated notion, it has not ceased to be a big deal, and no matter what our culture says, God has not changed his mind about it. And one of those sins that will always always always be horribly exceedingly sinful is abortion.

Let me read you a sworn testimony that was given in front of the senate judiciary committee on January 21, 1998:

Good morning. My name is Norma McCorvey. I’m sorry to admit that I’m the Jane Roe of Roe v. Wade.

The affidavit submitted to the Supreme Court didn’t happen the way I said it did, pure and simple. I lied! Sarah Weddington and Linda Coffey needed an extreme case to make their client look pitiable. Rape seemed to be the ticket. What made rape even worse? A gang rape! It all started out as a little lie, but my little lie grew and became more horrible with each telling.

Not only did I lie, but I was lied to. I did not come to the Supreme Court on behalf of a class of women. I wasn’t pursuing any legal remedy for my unwanted pregnancy. I did not go to the federal courts for relief. I met with Sarah Weddington to find out how I could obtain an abortion. She and Linda Coffey said they didn’t know where to get one. Sarah already had an abortion but she lied to me just like I lied to her! She knew where to get one, obviously, but I was of no use to her unless I was pregnant. Sarah and Linda were looking for somebody, anybody, to use to further their own agenda. I was their most willing dupe.

Since all these lies succeeded in dismantling every state’s protection of the unborn, I think it’s fair to say that the entire abortion industry is based on a lie.

Here’s the truth of what I saw in the abortion industry. I saw procedure rooms where sanitation and hygiene were after-thoughts. I worked with a doctor who operated on women while he was barefoot. I’ve worked in the clinics where drug use was rampant among clinic workers. I’ve had a doctor ask me to lie about the age of a fetus so he could charge more money for an abortion. One foreign-born doctor’s entire line of so-called counseling went like this: “You want an abortion, I give you abortion.”

But the most terrible of all, I saw women who were emotionally and physically scarred by their visit to an abortion clinic. They often came asking us if it was a baby, and more often than not, they were lied to and told no. “It’s a product of conception,” we’d say, or “it’s just a few missed periods, that’s all.”

One of my most harrowing experiences was in 1991. I was working behind the desk at an abortion clinic when a woman who was about six months pregnant walked into our office.

“You’re in the wrong place, honey,” I said. “The Ob-Gyn is down the hall. This is the place for abortions.”

“Oh no, I’m in the right place,” she said.

“But you’re showing,” I protested.

Her tone was insistent. “I know what I want, and what I want is an abortion.”

I felt terrible. When situations like these arose, I felt responsible. I had signed the affidavit which ultimately made this woman’s abortion legal. It was my pseudonym, Jane Roe, which had been used to create the “right” to abortion out of legal thin air. But Sarah Weddington and Linda Coffey never told me that what I was signing would allow women to come up to me 15, 20 years later and say, “Thank you for allowing me to have my five or six abortions. Without you, it wouldn’t have been possible.”

Sarah never mentioned women using abortions as a form of birth control. We talked about truly desperate and needy women, not women already wearing maternity clothes.

I finally grew tired of the lies and deception and decided to come out and tell the truth. My eyes were opened after I accepted Jesus Christ into my heart and then took my first objective look at a fetal development chart. When the facts are clearly laid out, even a four-year-old child can see that it’s a baby.

Our country has lived with legalized abortion for 25 years now. From personal experience, I can tell you from the bottom of my heart that our experiment with legal abortion is an utter failure.

Instead of supporting organizations such as Planned Parenthood with taxpayer money, we should support local crisis pregnancy centers who provide women with options other than killing their children. Younger women need the advice and guidance of their parents, yet the abortion lobby is trying to separate parents and children by fighting against parental consent laws. Women need to be fully informed. Doctors have a financial interest in a woman choosing abortion, so informed-consent laws are crucial to protect the patients’ interests. Believe me, I’ve seen firsthand how inadequate the counseling is. Finally, certainly we can all agree that something so extreme as partial-birth abortions should be stopped immediately. I call upon President Clinton to stop vetoing a bill which would protect these viable children. He has single-handedly allowed this horror to continue. I am dedicated to spending the rest of my life undoing the law that bears my name. It is my sincere prayer that there be no 30th anniversary of Roe v. Wade. I would like nothing more than to have this law overturned, either by an act of Congress or a reversal in the Supreme Court.

Thank you.” (https://www.nrlc.org/archive/news/1998/NRL2.98/norma298.html)

This was the testimony of the woman who started it all, the Roe of Roe v Wade. Did you know that she never even had an abortion? Did you know that she got saved? Did you know that she spent the rest of her life till the day she died trying to undo Roe v Wade?

More than fifty million innocent, precious babies have been butchered in the womb since 1973. So right here at the beginning of this message let me say it loud and clear: abortion is a sin.

Not a right, a sin.

Not a choice, a sin.

Not a “simple medical procedure,” a sin.

Not “something between a woman and her doctor,” a sin.

And not just any sin; abortion is among the most awful, heinous sins of all. What exactly measures up to horrifically murdering a baby?

Let’s look through Scripture at God’s very clear thoughts on the matter.

I. God made life, and specifically made man in His image, and into man alone breathed the breath of life

Genesis 1:26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. 27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

Genesis 2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

Let me put it plainly: we are not like the animals…

We are not “more advanced animals” or “More highly evolved animals,” we are not animals at all.

Have you ever stopped to look at the gap between man and animals? It seems like as “animals,” we would be at the top of the food chain, but that there would be something else pretty near to us, and then something else pretty close to that, etc.

But it isn’t like that at all. Not even close. Think of the “highest accomplishments” of the animal kingdom…

Now compare that with the highest accomplishments of man…

Light years apart. No comparison. God made us in His image. God infused us with potential second only to God Himself. Do you think I have overstated that? Check this out:

Genesis 11:6 And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.

That cannot be said of any animal, at all.

Human life, because it is made in the image of God, and because God breathed into man’s nostrils the breath of life, is sacred.

By the way, when you take that belief away, may I show you what you end up with?

“Human babies are not born self-aware, or capable of grasping that they exist over time. They are not persons.” With animals being self-aware, “the life of a newborn is of less value than the life of a pig, a dog, or a chimpanzee.” And “a period of 28 days after birth might be allowed before an infant is accepted as having the same right to live as others.” (From a column titled “A Professor of Infanticide at Princeton”, Jewish World Review, 9/13/99, quoting from Singer’s book “Practical Ethics”)

That is a series of quotes from Peter Singer, Professor of Bioethics at the Princeton University Center for Human Values. He believed it might be acceptable to kill a baby who had been born 28 days ago…

Do you want to know why people are killing each other in the streets of Chicago, and committing mass murder in Las Vegas? Well, why wouldn’t they be? If human life is not sacred, why not? If we are all the products of random chance, why not? If we are nothing but a higher form of animals, why not?

Human life has no value anymore, because the source of that value has been taken away from an entire society.

The only source of any value we have is that we are a special creation of God. If that isn’t true, then we are nothing more than cosmic accidents.

But if human life is sacred, then we are not cosmic accidents. And if human life is sacred and we are not cosmic accidents, then abortion is the willful destruction of a person that God has made in His own image for His own purpose.

II. God specifically speaks of His plans for people while they are still babes in the womb

Jeremiah 1:1 The words of Jeremiah the son of Hilkiah, of the priests that were in Anathoth in the land of Benjamin: 2 To whom the word of the LORD came in the days of Josiah the son of Amon king of Judah, in the thirteenth year of his reign. 3 It came also in the days of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah, unto the end of the eleventh year of Zedekiah the son of Josiah king of Judah, unto the carrying away of Jerusalem captive in the fifth month. 4 Then the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, 5 Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.

God had a plan for Jeremiah, and He ordained him to that plan while he was still a babe in the womb. God told Jeremiah that He knew him, even in the womb.

Has it ever dawned on you that every time an abortion is committed, God already knows the name of that child? The parent likely has not even picked on out, because all he or she or they want to do is get rid of the child. But God says “You just killed Sally. You just killed Thomas. You just killed Malia. You just killed Jeb. I had a plan for that child’s life…”

You say “But what if I had not even planned on getting pregnant? What if it even happened through a rape?”

That is a horrible, unimaginable thing, no one should ever have to go through that. And if rapists were consistently and quickly put to death like they should be, there would not be many rapes at all.

But how the child was conceived is not the child’s fault. And if a child is conceived, even in a horrible way, God is such a good God that He will have a plan even for that child’s life, and He will know even that child’s name.

III. God specifically demonstrates the personhood of those babes in the womb

Look at a couple of verses regarding John the Baptist:

Luke 1:15 For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother’s womb.

Luke 1:41 And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost: 42 And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. 43 And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44 For, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy.

In the womb John was filled with the Holy Ghost, in the womb John recognized the Messiah being carried by another lady in the room. In the womb John leaped for joy. Do you know what you call something that can be filled with the Holy Ghost, recognize the mother of the Messiah, and leap for joy?

A person.

The pro-abortion crowd says “It’s my body! No, it isn’t. That body inside your body is someone else’s body. It doesn’t belong to you. That tiny heart beating in there isn’t your heart. Those tiny fingers and toes wiggling aren’t your fingers and toes. That tiny circulatory system isn’t your circulatory system. You have a brand new, completely individual human being living and being nourished inside of you.

It isn’t a blob of tissue, it is a person. That baby has its own DNA! The greatest human rights issue of our day is abortion, because every day thousands of people have their right to life snuffed out right there inside their mother’s womb.

IV. God gave a simple command: thou shalt not kill. He was clearly speaking not of self defense or capital punishment, both of which are allowed by Scripture, but of murder, the taking of an innocent life

Exodus 20:13 Thou shalt not kill.

Abortion kills a living person. Abortion violates the sixth commandment. Eighteen days after conception, abortion literally stops a beating heart.

Abortion does not “save lives;” abortion takes a life 100% of the time. It is the only “medical procedure” specifically designed to take healthy humans and put them to death.

Don’t rail against “police shooting people” if you think abortion is acceptable. Don’t rail on “inner city violence” if you think abortion is acceptable. Don’t rail on the death penalty if you think abortion is acceptable. Don’t rail on terrorism if you think abortion is acceptable. Don’t even rail on the Inquisition if you think abortion is acceptable, because nothing has murdered more innocent lives than abortion. V. God has granted us enough scientific knowledge in our day to make abortion utterly inexcusable

There is nothing so remarkable as the way God forms a human life in the womb. Here is what science itself tells us:

At the very second of conception a new human life forms. It has it’s very own DNA, completely separate from that of mommy or daddy…

At 18 days, its heart starts to beat, at about 140 beats per minute…

At 21 days has its own blood type

at 28 days eyes and ears begin to form

42 days – brain waves recorded, skeleton complete, reflexes present.

At 12 weeks they have fingers and toes…

At 23 weeks in the womb, they start dreaming…

And how about the issue of pain? Pain receptors are present throughout the unborn child’s entire body by no later than 16 weeks after fertilization, and nerves link these receptors to the brain’s thalamus and subcortical plate by no later than 20 weeks. For unborn children, says Dr. Paul Ranalli, a neurologist at the University of Toronto, 20 weeks is a “uniquely vulnerable time, since the pain system is fully established, yet the higher level pain-modifying system has barely begun to develop.” As a result, unborn babies at this age probably feel pain more intensely than adults. (https://www.doctorsonfetalpain.com/fetal-pain-the-evidence/)

And yet here in America, we are one of only seven countries in the entire world that actually allows elective abortion after twenty weeks. Those babies are literally pulled apart, and they feel all of it, and we are in the club with countries like China, North Korea, and Vietnam that could not care less.

God have mercy on our wicked, sin-soaked society.

Let me say it again loudly and clearly: abortion is a sin! A sin A sin A sin A sin A sin! It is wicked and horrible and awful and devilish and demonic.

Abortion is a sin. Period. End of story.

Can you be forgiven if you have had one? Yes, yes, yes, the blood of Jesus Christ can cleanse even that heinous stain…

But this society, and our girls and boys growing up in our youth groups, and our men and women sitting on our pews need to know that abortion is a horrible, dirty, wicked, awful, abominable thing, and nothing will ever make it right.
